YAWA
YAWA is full-length documentary written and directed by
Chief Tashka and Laura Yawanawa, leaders of the Yawanawa
Amazonian tribe in Brazil, and produced in partnership
with Direct
Current
Media.
In a remote corner of the Brazilian Amazon, the Yawanawa
celebrate in a week of dance, artistic, cultural and spiritual
manifestations as a way to thank the rainforest spirits
for all the good they have provided.
"This show means a lot to our people," says
Chief Tashka Yawanawa "It is the realization of our
elders' dream to record our images so that future generations
will never forget them."
Chief Tashka also hopes that through their songs and images
they can inspire other indigenous people around the world
that are also in the process of
recovering and strengthening their ancestral traditions
and spiritual roots.
"YAWA reminds us of those remote times when our people
were practicing and living our traditions
without any influence
from the western world," Chief Tashka says.
